They / Them
Community means coming together under a shared experience, and being able to offer each other support because of that experience. It provides the relief of not having to explain and justify who you are and where you come from because others identify alongside you. Communities are a fluid and living thing; growing, changing, falling apart, and coming back together. They are as perfectly imperfect as the people who create them, and they take conscious effort to maintain. No one succeeds alone, and the communities we identify with are one of the most beautiful and complicated parts of our human experience.
One of the most important things to remember when when you're questioning and struggling with identity is that you don't need to know everything right now, and it's ok to take that pressure off of yourself. Some people know how they identify from a very young age, which is incredible, but for others it takes time, experience, and introspection. Your journey is your own, and as long as you're honest with yourself you'll find where you need to be. Even if you have figured out your identity, it's important to be open to the possibility that it may change over time. The concept of fluidity is being discussed and celebrated more and more, and it's amazing to have the opportunity to allow our identities to grow and change with our experiences.
It may not be easy to see right now, but you are not alone. Your community is out there. As long as you hold onto your own understanding of who you are, then you will find them. Being young and in a position where others have a say over how you express yourself is a struggle, and the people who say these are the best years of your lives are either lying to you or don't know any better. Plan now for how living authentically looks for you, so you're ready when the opportunity comes to break free. Let that be the hope that gets you through what you're going through now, and know that there are people out there who can help you when you're ready.
Facing bullying, peer pressure or force because you are queer is not ok, and I am so sorry that you've been forced to experience this. If you have people in your life who you can confide in, that support is so important, and do what you need to in order to stay physically safe. Always remember that these people can never take who you are away from you.
